Exercise may cut risk of 13 cancers, study suggests

A study of 1.4 million adults suggests that exercise could significantly reduce the risk for 13 types of cancer, including some of the most deadly types. The federal guidelines for exercise are 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity like jogging. These guidelines are primarily designed to improve heart health, but this study indicates that these guidelines could also decrease the risk for cancer.

Researchers suggest that even a couple hours per week of exercise could reduce the risk for breast, colon, and lung cancer, which are three of the four most common forms of cancer in Americans. According to this study, exercise can reduce the risk for esophageal cancer, a particularly deadly form of cancer, by 42 percent. Fortunately for avid exercisers, with more and more exercise comes a lower and lower risk for cancer.
